LESSON 2:THE CHURCH IS REVEALED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

LESSON 2

The Mission given to the apostles before Jesus ascended into heaven was to go out baptise and make disciples of humanity. But Jesus advised the Apostles to wait till he sent them the Holy Spirit. This happened  on Pentecost when the once covering apostles became emboldened and confident in their speech and came out of hiding proclaiming the risen Lord and converting the people.

Jesus knew that the Apostles needed the Holy Spirit before they could be missionaries as He knew the gifts would be  important and how they manifested.... as the tongues of fire rested on the heads of the Apostles and how eloquent the Apostles became professing God among the people ,speaking one language but being understood by all the  gift of tongues. How at Bable they dispersed due to not understanding each others language but now all understood despite being from different regions and dialects. The beginning of God's reunification of the Church.

The church was publicly  manifested to the world on Pentecost day (Fifty days after the resurrection of Christ)

Christians were first called so by the believers in Antioch a  city around Jerusalem and a bishop from Antioch named Ignatius first used the word Catholic to refer to the Church in 109A.D.

MEMORY VERSE: PSALM 119:105

Your word Lord is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path

Gifts of the Holy Spirit

In the Book of Isaiah 11:2-3, the Gifts of the Holy Spirit are described.Through Jesus, we also receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation.

1.Wisdom helps us recognize the importance of others and the importance of keeping God central in our lives

2.Understanding is the ability to comprehend the meaning of God's message.

3.Knowledge is the ability to think about and explore God's revelation, and also to recognize there are mysteries of faith beyond us.

4.Counsel is the ability to see the best way to follow God's plan when we have choices that relate to him.

6.Piety helps us pray to God in true devotion.

7.Fear of the Lord is the feeling of amazement before God, who is all-present, and whose friendship we do not want to lose.

Fruits of the Holy Spirit

“Just so, every good tree bears good fruit, and a rotten tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a rotten tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. So by their fruits you will know them.” (Matthew 7:17-20)

This passage in Matthew's Gospel helps us to understand the Fruits of the Holy Spirit, which are the observable behaviors of people who have allowed the grace of the Holy Spirit to be effective in them.

The tradition of the Church lists 12 fruits:

When we are filled with the Holy Spirit ,the gifts The Spirit bestows will bear fruit in and through us.
